Kelapo Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is the newest addition to the MTC family of business partners. Founder Erin Meagher needed dependable employees and hired two of MTC’s Advanced Job Skills trainees! Erin reports that they are capable, efficient employees fully integrated within the organization. The addition of the two new teammates, she says, has increased productivity and been well received by all.

Ms. Meagher is a former high school business teacher who branched out into her own business in 2009. Kelapo’s assembly line looks amazingly like our SunPass production area and was a natural fit for trainees familiar with MTC packaging contracts. Kelapo was created as a sustainable Extra Virgin Coconut Oil which is organic, Fair Trade Certified, and Vegetarian Approved. For more information on Kelapo, please visit their website at www.kelapo.com.

Consider the Case for Business

Hiring and retaining ‘qualified people’ with disabilities positions companies to create products and services that will meet the needs and generate the loyalty of the second largest minority group in the U.S. According to the 2010 NOD/Kessler Foundation Harris Survey “There is no significant difference between people with disabilities and their nondisabled peers in their ability to acquire new skills, their absenteeism rate, their flexibility to adapt to new situations and their dedication.”

88% of Americans prefer to give their business to employers who hire people with disabilities .(Source: Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation 2006).

MTC’s “Advanced Job Skills” (AJS)  meets the needs of those seeking employment in an intensified setting. The goal is to get individuals through the doors and out again with marketable skills in the quickest possible turn around. MTC’s Advanced Job Skills totally immerses the trainees in a workplace setting which facilitates the teaching and learning process through continuous feedback and application of new skills. Individuals attend classes based and built upon our EPIC (“Empowering People, Inspiring Change” ©) curriculum which emphasizes employment and the development of soft skills. Individuals benefit from a combination of classroom time and time on the production floor completing contract training. Community interaction, including bus training is emphasized.   Lessons learned through this pilot program have been adapted throughout our Adult Day Training job skills leading to an uptick of over 300% in placements in community employment.
